Cornwall Part 2 - Watergate Bay, Harlyn Bay & Rock Beach

Following on from my Cornwall part 1 post, the next 3 days we visited 3 different beaches! All of them beautiful, all of them dog friendly! We were lucky enough to have some lovely warm weather, yay for British weather (never thought i'd say that without any ounce of sarcasm!).

Our first beach visit was to Watergate Bay which is very popular with tourists/holidaymakers.
As you get to the beach there's a pay and display car park which isn't too expensive for a few hours, although this wasn't in school holidays so i imagine it would be much busier and you'd have to use the car park further back from the sea front which is a little more expensive. There is a short pleasant walk toward the beach and finally a few steps or a ramp depending on which direction you choose.

There were a lot of people on the beach for a Tuesday in term time, equally many lovely people with friendly dogs meaning Harvey had a blast making new friends and digging holes as he does (he especially enjoyed flicking sand all me!). The beach itself is amazing, being a really warm day it felt a little like i was abroad if i closed my eyes!
After spending a few hours either in the sea playing with Harvey (he loves water, as soon as he see's the sea he runs toward it) or helping him dig holes and find rocks we had a short walk back up to the car which is when unfortunately I managed to get a little sunburn! Not very clever, i do tend to forget how much stronger the sun and UV rays are by the coast.

Harlyn Bay was the next stop the following day, this beach is quite a lot quieter than Watergate Bay and parking is much cheaper too! It's not as easy to find though as there's several winding roads leading up to it then a sharp left turn which we almost missed. There is a small cliff-face on the car park which you walk past, it's such a short walk though that the car park is practically sitting on the edge of the beach which is great if you have young children with you.

As you can see from the cloud it was a lot cooler this day which was great for Harvey as he wasn't too warm and we didn't have to keep soaking him in sea water to keep him cool. Perfect point to state how important it is to keep your beloved dog hydrated and cool while on the beach! I honestly saw so many people with dark hair dogs just leaving them in the sun with no water and no where near the sea which is a little scary! Remember if they go in the sea they still need plenty of clean drinking water as salt is very dehydrating. There's an interesting article here which gives you great tips for keeping your furry friend hydrated that's worth a read! I ended up giving Harvey my water as he drank a 2 litre bottle to himself. He usually doesn't drink massive amounts which proves how important hydration is at the beach even on a cloudy day.
Once the sea goes out there are some rock pools nearer to the car park end of the beach, we didn't go over as Harvey was getting a little tired by this point (he is a senior after all!) but i imagine all the children running over there loved it!

The final beach we visited was my favourite of the trip - Rock Beach. I had seen some good reviews about this beach but to start with i wasn't too optimistic as there's only one tiny car park at one end which was full, bearing in mind again this wasn't school holidays i imagine it's impossible to park anywhere when it is. We ended up driving back on ourselves and away from the coast where there is a small pay and display field which is unbelievably cheap, i think we paid around £2.00 for four hours. Although it was quite a walk down a busy road back towards the beach and harbour it was definitely worth it! There is a few bars/pubs on the seafront so food and drink isn't a problem.

Don't think anyone wanted to walk this far down the beach as it was pretty much deserted, either that or we smelt bad! (I honestly didn't, for those of you seriously considering that statement!).

 Cue the mandatory beach pose...

I may or may not have about 5 out-takes of this photo, if you've tried to do this before when someone shouts move your hand up/down/left/right it's actually pretty difficult!
We took a slow walk along the beach until we got to the very end. I've honestly never seen such a beautiful beach without jumping on a plane for a few hours! This one really did feel like we were walking down a beach abroad, obviously this was helped by the glorious sunshine. The only downside was a few jellyfish on the sand near to where the boats are, well downside for us as Harvey likes to investigate and runs straight up to them! Cue me running over frantically to move him away and screaming like a loony! The photos i took really do not do it justice, it's one of those beaches where you really have to visit to experience the true beauty of it. I'd really recommend Rock Beach and i would go back in an instant.

So there you have it, some beautiful beaches in such a pretty part of England. If we had more time we have done a lot more but obviously you can only do so much in a short amount of time! Safe to say i now love Cornwall and will definitely be going back!

Have you been to Cornwall? Which beaches are your favourite?
